Review: ‘Kinky Boots’ a Triumphant Celebration of the Human Spirit

(HOUSTON)— With glitter, glamour and Cyndi Lauper‘s campy sweet music and lyrics, Kinky Boots captivates audiences with its celebration of diversity and the entreprenurial spirit at Houston’s Theatre Under the Stars.

When Charlie Price (Steven Booth) is suddenly thrust into leadership of his late father’s struggling shoe factory, he must shoulder the burden to keep his childhood community working in spite of lagging sales.

But, after a chance encounter with Lola (Darius Harper), a London drag queen, the unlikely duo set out to save an English town from poverty, find a performer the perfect set of heels, and make peace with the dreams and disappointments of both their fathers.

Based on the 2005 film of the same name and winner of six Tony Awards in 2013, including Best Musical, Kinky Boots is colorful, majestic and is as entertaining as it is inspirational.

Darius Harper is a red-hot attention magnet as Lola, radiating strength and sincerity as the boy who came to embrace and love the person within. Harper’s exceptional performance and physical prowess has audiences joining in raucous applause, flanked with a host of most heavenly Angels.

Steve Booth delivers an exceptional performance as Charlie, carrying the hopes, dreams and convictions of Charlie with exciting and almost heartbreaking depth.

The inner battle of a girl versus herself plays out with stunning sincerity by Lindsay Nicole Chambers. Chambers stole the show (and our hearts) several times, and is a standout among such a versatile cast.

Kinky Boots plays at Theatre Under the Stars through Feb. 22, 2015. Tickets are available now on TUTS.com, by phone at (713)558-2600, or at the Hobby Center for the Performance Arts Box Office at 800 Bagby.

The production features some elements that may not be suitable for younger viewers.
